Unfortunately, rainy days are inevitable in The Hague. Even though the Dutch have become quite accustomed to the Dutch climate, it does not mean that we like it…

Fortunately, a rainy day doesn’t mean you have to sit inside. The Hague is filled with hotspots where you can enjoy yourself while being indoors. Read our tips below for fun activities in The Hague on a rainy day.

 

1. Visit a museum in The Hague

In het Mauritshuis in Den Haag bewonder je de beste schilderijen die Nederland kent, zoals die van Rembrandt en Vermeer.

The Hague has numerous nice museums where you can view the most beautiful works of art while staying warm and dry.

One of our absolute favorites is a bit further away, but still close enough to include as The Hague. We’re talking about museum Voorlinden, where you can walk through the artworks and experience them yourself.

Another absolute must is the Kunstmuseum (meaning: Art Museum), where you have a large collection of works by Picasso, Van Doesburg, Monet and Toorop. It is also the place with the largest collection of paintings by Piet Mondriaan in the world.

2. Go for a snack in the food hall MingleMush

If you’re looking for a cozy atmosphere while enjoying a snack and drink, MingleMush might be a great idea. This food hall is full of all kinds of different stalls, where you can eat dishes from all over the world.

From hot chocolate to cocktails and from roti to poké bowls; here you can enjoy all kinds of delicacies.

3. Enjoy a cup of coffee in one of the coffee bars in The Hague

De dag beginnen doe je bij Hometown koffie. Want niet alleen hebben ze hier havermout, smoothies en breakfast bowls, ze hebben ook een uitgebreide keuze uit koffies, slow coffees en ijskoffies.

What a nice feeling when you take a sip of your hot coffee, while it’s pouring outside and you have no place you need to be. Enjoy reading a book, chatting with your friends or working on your laptop while you wait for the storm to pass.

For example, drink a nice cup at Anne & Max, while you treat yourself to a piece of their delicious cake, or at Hometown, with its cozy atmosphere.

4. Enjoy a delicious Afternoon Tea in The Hague

Of course you don’t need nice weather to enjoy a high tea. And let’s be honest, on bleak days it’s more than ok to treat yourself to cake, chocolate, scones, sandwiches and of course liters of hot tea.

Is it winter time? Then check out the Winter High Tea at Yoghurt Barn, where you can try their Hot Specials. Another lovely option is the high tea at Bloem, where you get the full English experience, including matching crockery!

5. Go shopping in the Passage

De Passage in Den Haag is een rijksmonument vol met leuke winkels.

One of our favorite things to do when it rains is shopping, because you don’t necessarily have to go through the rain. Go shopping in the Passage; a national monument in the middle of the city with various shops.

6. Watch a movie at the Filmhuis

If you really wanna escape the outside world for a while, then visit the cinema. You can of course go to Pathé, but even more fun is the Filmhuis, where there is a huge variety and versatile range of films to be seen.

So, put on your cozy sweater, treat yourself to the largest bowl of popcorn and forget about the rain during a fun movie.

7. Try the Escape Rooms in The Hague with your friends

Are you good at solving riddles and puzzles? Then an Escape Room is probably just the thing for you. In this game you have one hour to go from clue to clue, in order to escape the room within time. A fun activity to do with your friends, family or colleagues.

For example, try one of the five VR Escape Rooms at AmazeVR, where you escape with Virtual Reality glasses. Prefer to try the traditional Escape Room? Try the game of Operation Exit The Hague, which is located in a beautiful old building and tells the story of Baron van Hagesteijn and his country house.

 

8. Jump on the trampolines of Jump XL

Jumping at Jump XL in The Hague is not only fun with the kids, but also perfect if you’re looking for a good workout.

Participate in the intensive group training in which you do all kinds of exercises on the trampolines. And we speak from experience that this workout is really intensive… Of course you can also just freely jump in the different areas.

9. Play Pac-Man, Mario Kart and other games at Gamestate

Daag je lover, huisgenoot, broer of moeder uit voor een potje Mario Kart, Pac-Man, Air Hockey of een toffe VR game bij Gamestate in Den Haag.

Just because it is raining, doesn’t mean you have to get bored. And a visit to Gamestate is proof of that. Challenge your lover, housemate, brother or mother to a game of Mario Kart, Pac-Man, Air Hockey or a VR game.

The entrance is free and you can buy a Gamestate card on which you put your play credit. Then you choose a game, keep your pass in front of the scanner and you can play! After you play you win tickets, which you can redeem for prizes.

10. Go ice skating at De Uithof

Voor het echte wintergevoel ga je natuurlijk schaatsen. In De Uithof in Den Haag is de 400 meter schaatsbaan van oktober t/m maart geopend. In De Uithof kan je ook skiën, snowboarden, klimmen, karten en lasergamen. Genoeg leuke dingen dus voor een regenachtige dag!

If you are looking for the real winter feeling, skating is the go to activity. The 400-meter ice rink in De Uithof in The Hague is opened from October until March. In De Uithof you can also try skiing, snowboarding, climbing, go-karting and laser gaming. Enough fun things for a rainy day!

11. Watch a musical at the AFAS Circustheater

Musicals, concerts, family shows and all kinds of other fun theater shows; in Scheveningen there are plenty of options in the AFAS Circus Theater.

It is the place where the famous musicals are performed, such as The Lion King, Wicked and Aïda. The Circus Theater is also the stage of many comedians and their shows.

A super fun activity with your partner, family or friends, to escape the cold weather.

12. Experience Omniversum

Going to the movies in Omniversum in The Hague is quite different than the regular cinema. This movie theater is basically a large screen in the shape of a hemisphere, and the advanced sound system even allows you to feel the tones.

The movies at Omniversum are mainly focused on culture, nature and science. In this way, Omniversum wants to bring people knowledge about human life, nature and the planet on which we live.

A very impressive experience, regardless of your age. Perfect on a cold or rainy day!
