1. Mauritshuis

In het Mauritshuis in Den Haag bewonder je de beste schilderijen die Nederland kent, zoals die van Rembrandt en Vermeer.

The Mauritshuis is home to a number of absolute gems of Dutch art. Here you’ll find paintings by the world famous Rembrandt and Vermeer, such as Vermeer’s “Girl with a Pearl Earring” and “The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp” by Rembrandt.

It’s already in the name; in this museum in The Hague you can visit an impressive panoramic artwork by Mesdag. Mesdag painted the surroundings of Seinpostduin in a cylindrical shape, measuring no less than 14 meters high and 120 meters in circumference.

3. Haags Historisch Museum

Midden in het historische centrum van Den Haag, leer je in het Haags Historisch Museum alles over de stad. Schilderijen en voorwerpen vertellen je een verhaal en er zijn regelmatig tijdelijke tentoonstellingen te bezichtigen.

4. Escher in Het Paleis

This museum is entirely dedicated to the work of the Dutch Maurits Cornelis Escher. The museum is filled with more than 150 prints of his oeuvre. In addition to his famous prints and earlier work of Italian landscapes, there is an interactive exhibition that plays with realism.

5. Museon

Het Museon museum is compleet gewijd aan de wetenschap. Hier leert jong en oud alles over onderwerpen als natuurkunde, geologie, archeologie en biologie.

A museum completely dedicated to science. It’s the place where both young and old learn everything about physics, geology, archeology, biology and more.

In their permanent exhibition “One Planet” you will learn about sustainable development goals and how you can contribute to a liveable world. In addition, there are also other smaller exhibitions about, for example, prehistory, volcanoes, the North Pole or the Romans.

6. GEM, museum for contemporary art

In het GEM museum in Den Haag kun je het werk bekijken van zowel opkomend talent als gevestigde namen, zoals dat van kunstenares Emma Talbot.

GEM was set up by the Kunstmuseum Den Haag as the place to admire contemporary art. The work of both emerging talent and established names are exhibited here in three exhibitions per year.

Not only paintings, but also (video) installations, photography, film and sculpture are exhibited here.

7. Photo Museum The Hague

The Photo Museum in The Hague is located in the same building as GEM. Here you will find, as the name suggests, everything about photos.

In the Photo Museum they work from the idea that photography is an art form; truth is subjective and it is up to the visitor to discover the meaning and the context.

Photography in the fields of different periods and genres spread over six exhibitions per year, where people are often the focal point. Well worth a visit if you are a photography enthusiast.

8. Kunstmuseum Den Haag

As an art lover, this museum should not be missing from your visit to The Hague. The “Kunstmuseum Den Haag” (art museum) contains a large collection of works by Picasso, Van Doesburg, Monet and Toorop, and it is also the place with the largest collection of paintings by Piet Mondriaan in the world.

9. Louwman Museum Den Haag

The Louwman Museum is all about the history of cars and their goal is to show this to visitors in a clear and fascinating way. The museum has a collection of over 275 antique and classic cars, dating back to 1934. A fun place to go when you love cars.

10. Madurodam

Madurodam is een museum vol met honderden miniaturen die Nederland weergeven, en waar je als een “reus” doorheen kan wandelen.

Madurodam is full of hundreds of miniatures that depict the Netherlands, which you can walk through as if you were a giant. Think of historic city centers, port areas, airports, modern neighborhoods, nature reserves and so on. You will also find miniature cars, planes and boats.

11. Museum Beelden aan Zee

The Museum Beelden aan Zee in Scheveningen is fully focused on sculptures. The focus is mainly on modern, contemporary sculptures from all over the world that can be seen three or four times a year in changing exhibitions.

12. Museum de Gevangenpoort

Het Museum de Gevangenpoort neemt je terug naar de middeleeuwse gevangenis. Van 1420 tot 1828 was dit namelijk de plek waar grote criminelen werden gehouden, in afwachting van hun proces.

The Museum de Gevangenpoort (Prison Gate Museum) takes you back to the medieval prison. From 1420 to 1828, this was where criminals were held pending trial.

See and experience for yourself how they used to be imprisoned, judged and punished. In the Museum de Gevangenpoort you will learn about the prison cells, the differences between poor and rich prisoners and the punishments they received.

13. De Mesdag Collectie

In het museum De Mesdag Collectie kan je een kijkje nemen in het woonhuis en tevens atelier van schilder Hendrik Willen Mesdag.

Apart from being a painter, Hendrik Willem Mesdag was also an art collector. That is why he built a museum next to his house in 1887 for all art lovers.

In the museum The Mesdag Collection you can take a look at his house, his studio and the museum where his collection is exhibited.
